What You See Is What You Get?

We all know humans are judgmental animals, there’s no point disputing the fact.
Even if you don’t want to, your brain forms a judgment on first impression or glance, however temporary or flexible this initial judgment may be.

Your judgment on people is what defines how you behave towards them.
But my question is, what defines your judgment?
Is it the person’s looks, the way he behaves, the way he dresses, his status in society? All of the above?

The person’s personality alone, perhaps?
Haha fat chance.

In my experience, people tend to judge you based on rather superficial standards; status symbols if you please.
Judgment, atleast over here, is often based on stereotype.

Quiet, therefore obedient.
Mini skirt, therefore party animal.
Head scarf, therefore backward.
Rock music, therefore deviant.
Pop music, therefore airhead.
Politician’s son, therefore arrogant.
Doctor’s sibling, therefore genius.
Preacher’s son, therefore saint.

And so it goes.
Is it accurate at all? Sometimes, yes.
But what bugs me is that it’s rare that people accept the fact that they could be wrong.

Ohh she dresses this way, she’s so-and-so’s daughter, she went to this school, therefore obviously, she’s blah blah blah.
Sure, these status symbols say something about where a person comes from, but they latch onto their image whether they like it or not, unalterable circumstances that have little to do with their sense of humour, intelligence, or personality.

Yet they seem to hold the power, to make a person you’ve never even met or had an hour’s chat with, to have already formed a judgment on what sort of person you are, a warped one regardless of whether it’s positive or negative.
Or worse, change the opinion of a person who does know you.

Or just human?
