Do you feel safe walking out alone on the streets after 7pm?
Why not?

Well there you go.

well, in most countries girls walk the street at midnight and nothing bad ever happens to them…society has to grow up and hopefully someday it will…

  2. Makuluwo says:

"well, in most countries girls walk the street at midnight and nothing bad ever happens to them…"Uh..? Have you checked the mugging/rape stats? It's the same everywhere, sometimes worst in the most developed countries.

  3. Gadgetgirl says:

Women and girls are prohibited to walk after 6PM in Mumbai, if so, they are supposed to have pepper spray handy. 🙂

  4. Chavie says:

I'm not sure whether it's the same in other countries, but I have cousins in Australia who use public transport in the middle of the night to get back home, ALONE! :/ they've never really run into a problem, and they've lived there all of their lives…usually, poverty = crime. there are some (relatively poor and unsafe) neighbourhoods that are better avoided, whether you're a woman or a man…

  5. St. Fallen says:

what's funny is that women used to dominate, and by staying at home while the men went out to hunt and gather food!society is probably the worst thing that's ever happened to humanity, in my opinion.

  6. Aamina says:

I feel safer in Mumbai than in Sri Lanka though..n i've been out at all times…but then that's mumbai…rest of India not so safe

  7. PseudoRandom says:

I make it a point not to walk alone after 10pm. It's not so bad when I'm cycling (although even then there are times when I don't feel safe). If I'm walking, I try and get one of my guy friends to 'escort' me…or I get a taxi, although even that's not that safe.Over here, gender is becoming increasingly irrelevant. The general rule is – if you're alone, you're at risk. While I think women are still at more risk, it'd be naive to assume that the men are safe.

  8. Anonymous says:

why are you worried about these things you shifani tomboy ?

  9. Sach says:

I don't know about the west, but in Japan you could definitely walk any street without having to worry about your sex.

  10. Aamina says:

@ GGWhoever told u that about Mumbai? It's one of the safest if not the safest city in India…It's Delhi where girls are told to be wary after 6pm..I've been out at all time alone..even using public transport and I havent had a problem. It's true that one needs to be careful..but thats the case everywhere. It depends on the attitude of the society in that place as well. Some men take it on themselves to insult women traveling alone with the intention of being all 'protective' when really it's them who are the greatest threat to a woman's safety.

  11. Sean says:

Depends on the country I guess…I've lived in the UK and New Zealand for several years. Would never consider a female (or male) wandering around London alone. Auckland on the other hand is perfectly safe… plenty of women wander around at all hours through the city. Then again… NZ was the first country to give women the vote…

  12. hijinx says:

Hmmm. I usually ignore it if I can, but yeah. :/

  13. Gadgetgirl says:

@Aamina- Well I have two of my friends, one who's studying there and another who lives in Mumbai and her home area prolly is quite not safe am told. However, I agree that Delhi is most infested.

  14. Dayaan says:

I know how you feel, I wasn't allowed to walk around the streets when I was in Sri Lanka either :(.
